Coach with Mercy Street Sports

Mercy Street’s vision is to equip Christian leaders in inner-city Dallas and we believe team sports can play a huge role in this. Your role as a coach would be to teach the fundamentals of the sport, while using it as a tool to share the Gospel, teach various life skills, and instill Christian values. Make an impact in the lives of young athletes. Our coaches teach the fundamentals of a sport and the fundamentals of faith.

Coach Onboarding and Communication Process

We’re so glad to hear that you’re interested in joining us as a volunteer coach. We believe you’ll make a big impact, and we can’t wait to get you started. Please find the steps below to begin your journey with us. If you’d like to chat more about coaching or have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help!

1) Coach Application

Start by completing your coach application here. As part of the application, please provide three references—personal, spiritual, and professional (family members can be included). This helps us get to know you better and ensure we’re all aligned in our mission.

2) Background Check

Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive an email from Checkr to complete a quick background check. This will only take a minute, and it’s a standard part of our onboarding process to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

3) MinistrySafe Sexual Abuse Awareness Training

After your application is submitted, you’ll also receive an email from MinistrySafe with a link to the Sexual Abuse Awareness Training. This is a required course, and we ask that you set aside 1 hour to complete it. It’s an essential part of preparing you to serve responsibly and protect those we mentor.

4) Coach and Parent Meeting

Attend an in-person Coach Orientation session. This is where you’ll get more information about your role and expectations, and the values that guide us at Mercy Street. We’ll schedule you for the next available session after your other steps are completed.  Typically these meetings are held 2 to 3 weeks in advance of the season start.

5) Get your feet wet! Two-deep Leadership

We value having a coaching team rather than an individual, and hope to have both a head and assistant coach for each team.  Additionally, first time coaches and participants may be asked to serve as assistant coaches alongside an experienced Mercy Street Sports coach their first season.  Assistant coach versus head coach assignments are made at the discretion of Mercy Street Sports staff.

6) Refer a Friend!

Do you know someone who would be a great fit as a coach? Share the link here. Help us spread the word! Share the opportunity to mentor at Mercy Street with your friends and encourage them to apply. The more, the merrier!

7) Communication Expectations

Once registration and clearance are completed, coaches will be expected to communicate with parents, teams, and other relevant parties through the league app. This platform will be used for all official updates, schedule changes, team communications, and other important notices. Please ensure you are familiar with the app and check it regularly to stay updated and maintain clear communication with all involved.

Once all the steps are complete, you’ll be ready to start making a difference as a coach! We are truly grateful for your willingness to volunteer and for your heart to invest in others.

For any questions or assistance during the onboarding process, please reach out to Estefania Ortiz at estefania@mercystreetdallas.org. She will be happy to guide you through the steps.

The time commitment for a coach is 1-2 hours a week for practice and 1-2 hours a week for games. Most practices take place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, while our games are played on either Friday nights or Saturdays during season. Typically, our leagues include boys and girls ages 4-14.

The first step to becoming a coach is to complete our volunteer application. We run background checks on all of our coaches each year. We also require our coaches to complete an online sexual abuse awareness training through Ministry Safe (about an hour).
